Collaboration done right by Steve Ulfelder, Network World, 12/22/03. makes the point that "Real-time collaboration tools such as IM and Web conferencing are making serious inroads in corporations even though few businesses can point to quantified results. Rather, what's selling them on collaboration tools are "soft" benefits such as the increased flexibility O'Connor experienced and greater productivity."

Anecdotal evidence from Professional Service Industries (PSI), a consulting, engineering and testing firm in Orlando Florida, began using WebEx a year ago and travel costs plummeted. "PSI's complex engineering projects and 150 offices in 40 states made assembling employees for training sessions and meetings an expensive, logistical mess, says David Lukasik, chief learning officer at PSI."

The Washington Post interviewed Gerald E. Connolly (D), the new chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, in it's January 4, 2004 column Questions and Answers With... . In responding to a question about priorities for the coming year, Connelly included in his answer, "Environmentally, we need to make sure to tackle watershed management and implement the rather aggressive telework plan we have for the county."

What's the plan? The Fairfax County government website's Telework page lays out the goal: "Currently, more than 400 county employees telework an average of 2-4 days a month. An expansion plan is underway to raise that number to 1,000 by 2005. Telework expansion reflects the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors' support of the regional goal set by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments -- to reach a level of 20 percent of the eligible workforce teleworking one day a week or more by 2005." Great goal, but how will they reach it?
