Toni Kister takes a look at the flip side of the top-down efforts to promote telework (Bottom-up telework, Network World, 3/1/04). Many ideas are based on best practices from Canada, for example, the Commuter Challenge: "a friendly competition between Canadian cities to see which one can cut its air pollution the most by using active and/or sustainable modes of transportation," for example, biking, carpooling, or teleworking. The competition lasts only one week (May 30 - June 5, 2004), so a long term commitment is not required.
