How home computers help doctors save lives Remote access system lets health care professionals make more accurate off-site diagnoses (Kevin Marron, Special to The Globe and Mail, Thursday, March 4, 2004)

"Winter driving in the mountains of central British Columbia [Canada] can be difficult and sometimes dangerous. So the Interior Health Authority that delivers services to a scattered population of 700,000 residents is anxious to cut travel time for physicians, other health care professionals and their patients in a region where both a nurse and a doctor have been killed in traffic accidents in recent years."

This article describes how the health care industry in Canada is using low-bandwidth technologies that allow doctors and other health care professionals to work across distances - remote access systems based on technolgoies from Microsoft, IBM, and Citrix Systems.

Step one: accomplished! Next challenge: add virtual presence, so that in addition to reviewing charts and X-rays, doctors can evaluate live patients across distances. Yes, really!
