Home again after a weekend in Door County, I decided to check that turkey nest this evening. Took me awhile to find it, and when I did, the evidence was inconclusive.

There were eggshell fragments in the nest and larger pieces of shell a few feet away, with the membrane sticking to the inner shell. That suggested the eggs had been eaten by some predator. About 10 feet west of the nest, a pile of feathers suggested the hen met her demise, or at least struggled valiantly to save her eggs. Since it rained this morning and on the 4th, it was impossible to tell when the nest had been vandalized, or what happened to the hen. Too bad. I was looking forward to a brood of turkeys wandering around the fields and woods hereabouts.

Too tired for more tonight.

Later,,,
