Okoboji, IA. Brian
Smith, incoming president of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor
Writers (AGLOW), stunned the membership of this regional writers
organization at its annual Golden Glow Awards banquet here tonight when
he presented a check for $40,000 to outgoing AGLOW president Mike
Schoonveld. The check represented a grant from the Christel De
Haan Family Foundation to AGLOW to help the organization
meet its goals. The gift will be disbursed over a three-year
period as follows: $10,000 in 2004, $20,000 in 2005, and the remaining
$10,000 in 2006.
The check bore the foundation's motto: "Make sure the world
becomes a better place because of your involvement." In accepting
the check, Schoonveld said that AGLOW is at a crossroads and that the
de Haan Foundation gift came at a perfect time.
"Some opportunities have presented themselves to make a quantum leap in
our membership," Schoonveld said. "We're going to actively pursue
those in the next year to recruit new members, get more people involved
in the organization and continue the things that are working for
us. We want to make the 'Learn it, do it' sessions bigger, better
and stronger and enhance the already good relationships between
individual and corporate members."
AGLOW executive director Curt Hicken and board chairman Dan Donarski
said the board would begin work immediately to prioritize AGLOW's needs
so that the De Haan gift is put to its best use.
