On my drive home, I was listening to my book on CD.  It was discussing that the way to establish relationships at work is to bring joy & affection to the people that you interact with.  How one person can change an environment.  And how you shouldn't wait around for folks, but take the first step on your own.  One of the examples, they gave is going to a grocery store and having two clerks doing the exact same job, but the different experience for the customers going through the lines; one just doing a job and the other really enjoying a job and showing some caring/interest for her cowokers and the customers.  As I pulled into my local grocery store, I was greeted with a booming, "Welcome to Shoppers," by a gentleman helping folks take their groceries to their cars.  And, after I did my shopping and pushed my cart outside, I was again greeted by him and he helped me carry my groceries to my car.  On the short walk, he shared with me how he receives fun feedback all day...and gets lots of smiles.

He's not working an easy job...he's on his feet all day and not paid a lot for it.  But, he makes the most of that time at work.  I think that's a reminder we all need from time to time.  For anyone reading this:  you could have a worse job and be in a rougher situation.  While we can all continue to strive for career growth/development (if that's your interest), but we should each make the most of each day.  Most of us spend 8+ hours / day doing this job.  If we spend it hating it...that's our own lives that we're missing.

Try this:  spend a few minutes (maybe with your eyes closed?) reflecting on the best possible (happiest) way your job could be done today.  Is the person doing the job smiling?  Are they greeting their coworkers and showing a genuine affection for others?  How do they respond to additional work/requests?  How do they begin and end the day?  Doesn't it look better than the way you normally spend your day?  It's your happiness at stake.

I realized today that the whole time I'm playing guitar at lunch I'm nervous and a little flushed 'cause of the thought of people hearing me.  I gotta get over that!

The goal of life is happiness.  It is.  And when I can remind myself of that goal, it's a good thing.  I feel all smiley and peaceful and in love with the world.  It's easy in my office back away from everything to feel lonely and then I remind myself that I am capable of changing that by going to say hello to some folks or to just take advantage of the peace.

I started listening to the "Art of Happiness at Work" and one of the take-aways so far (still on CD one of six) is that when you're experiencing negative emotions (for example, being upset about not getting a promotion) to ask yourself what that emotion accomplishes?  How will it make you feel?  How will that reaction make other people react to you?"  And so forth.  I'm not of the mindset that we can just get rid of emotions, but we can try to control through.  Sometimes easier than others, but I love the idea.

Morning number four at the gym.  Yay!!  Didn't do as much running today...just did a quick mile and did it in intervals of walking/jogging (though, means i did the jogging faster than I normally did).  And then I switched machines.  I figure those particular muscles needed a break.

David asked yesterday about singing...I really can't sing.  I mean, I do it in the car, but...  I would like to play guitar and Tisha sing one day, but my lessons are still new so she'd be singing "jingle bells" and "over the rainbow" and such for now.  Maybe in another year.  Really, I would like to write my own songs 'cause I'm goofy like that.

Last night I got off work early and headed down to where I'd be meeting the girls for margarita-night.  Well, i got there way early and the coffee shop I was planning to go to was closed.  So, I went to the shop on the Avenue that has my favoritest cards and spent too much $$ on cards.  And then I went wine shopping and found two bottles that sound simply delightful.  It was a nice time on my own.  I even had time to fill out some of the cards.  Oh, two of the cards were for me.  From me. heh.  Anyway, it was nice to see the girls, but we had crappy service and food, so we are going to try to find another place before next month.

I guess that's it for me.  Off to shower and work!
