Virus Checkers and Updates(are we all vulnerable?)

I was sitting here thinking (as I try to connect to the www.grisoft.cz site to get the latest updates for my AVG virus checker) what a vulerable situation we are in with the providers of these virus checkers. Millions of us each day automatically download and install whatever is provided.

What would happen if one or more of these providers were invaded, virtually or physically or if someone inside was pissed off or blackmailed and a virus or trojan was actually supplied as part of the update.

What kind of attack vector would that provide? What kind of internet chaos would that cause? I shudder to think. I wonder if anybody has ever done a study of how stable these virus companies actually are?
