Spate of Child Killings Horrifies Japan (AP).

Murder suspect Juan Carlos Pizarro Yagi, covering his face, emerges from a police custody to be transferred to a prosecutor's office for further questioning in Hiroshima, western Japan, Friday, Dec. 2, 2005. Yagi, a 30-year-old Peruvian of Japanese descent, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murdering Airi Kinoshita, 7-year-old schoolgirl, and disposing of her body. Japan's top law official called for a task force to crack down on crimes by foreigners Friday, amid national outrage over the killing of the schoolgirl blamed on the Peruvian man. The killing has drawn intense scrutiny in Japan, where concern about crime runs high and mistrust about foreigners often runs deep. Japan keeps its borders mostly closed to immigrants and refugees despite what many say is the urgent need for an influx to offset the country's aging population and declining work force. (AP Photo/Kyodo News)Armed policemen patrol streets on the way to school, education officials draw up safety maps and young students carry alarms to call for help in an emergency. A spate of grisly crimes targeting schoolchildren has horrified Japan and dealt a serious blow to its image as a safe country for children.
