Back in February Governor Easley's administration announced the $4B "N.C. Moving Ahead!" transportation program that reportedly will create 30,000 North Carolina jobs. Partially funded by a $700M set-aside that was originally earmarked for new "urban loops", the legislature apparently saw the folly in continuing this practice in favor of improving the roads we have and placing more funding toward public transportation. The much talked about light rail system connecting Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Charlotte makes a ton more long-term sense than constructing additional "beltways"
A draft of planned expenditures toward moving the rail system forward was discussed in Raleigh on Monday as reported by the N&R (online only). Included in the draft is $500k for PART to begin studying a light rail system that would conncect N.C.A&T University in Greensboro with Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, presumably with a stop or two in between.
This light rail project might be the only public transprtation facility deemed cool enough to finally get more people out of their cars as it has in other parts of the nation.
