I just returned from the Greensboro Sportsplex whose basketball program has recently come under scrutiny by the News & Record and the some members of the Greensboro City Council. The place was really hoppin'... every court and soccer field was full.
For the record, my kids have been in the indoor roller hockey program out there since way before the City bought the place. We were there when they first opened the doors under the Pyramids brand and know a LOT of people who frequent the facility.
Many of my acquaintances at the Sportsplex are basketball families whom, I found out tonight, have very strong feelings about the issues brought up in this recent N&R article. From all indications, the situation surrounding amatuer basketball in East Greensboro is heating quickly to a rolling boil.
According to the side of the story that I heard tonight, the core of this brewing controversy has little to do with the decreasing role of public oversight by appointed Boards and Commissions (which I wrote about earlier) and everything to do with the usual issues of City Government... power, politics, race and money.
I will check with the City Attorney's office before I elaborate further on this issue which will most assuredly, and rightfully, be heard by me and my fellow Commissioners on the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Commission and probably the City Council.
