Rain, rain go away...

There's been an ongoing theme here for quite sometime.  In fact, for as long as I've been blogging, it has been raining here in Central Pennsylvania.  For close to two years now... preceded by a year of snow.  Which, I guess, in some respects is good.  Especially if your looking for one more excuse to indulge in the comforts of comfort foods. 

Our monthly Poker Nights are no exception.  It is always the perfect excuse to indulge.  Massages, wine or cocktails, good food-- usually cheese has the starring role.  Oh!  Did you really think we played poker?? 

Certainly the need for comfort foods doesn't require a lot of time in the kitchen.  In fact, this week it was all about pre-made, prepared foods from the grocer's shelves.  A luscious spinach pie made with Pillsbury crescents, frozen spinach, ricotta and mozzarella; sweet and sour meatballs from frozen meatballs and a tangy marinade sauce, and mixed greens tossed with feta crumbles and sundried tomatoes.  Effortless and delicious.

On my way out, I grabbed a bottle of wine to take along.  Hill of Content, 2001 Grenache Shiraz is a friendly, light but appealing wine and at $9.99 in our Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board stores, is a bargain (though it kills me to think it probably sells for far less elsewhere...). 

Wine Spectator says it is appealing for its "delicately spicy cherry flavors, finishing on a floral note" and rates it an 88-- for whatever that's worth.  I say its a great red wine to stock up on and enjoy when your looking for a red wine that has a little muscle to it, but don't need to be clobbered with massive fruit.  This one's all about that good old easy, comforting feeling for those good old easy comforting times.  Especially when it's still raining....
