San Simeon Winery Pinot Grigio Reserve Monterey County 2003

I love introducing people to outstanding wines.  I know I've done my job well when the phone rings and on the other end I hear, "what was the name of that wine we had, it was so incredible, I want to take a bottle to dinner tonight."  Unfortunately in this particular case, the request came for the San Simeon Winery's Reserve 2003 Pinot Grigio -- bottled exclusively for members of the Gold Medal Wine Club.  San Simeon is the product of the Riboli Family's winemaking talents, much of which are reserved for club members (and hence not being able to find the exact lable image!).  I must have been a very good girl this year.  Santa Sous Chef left a membership under my tree.

This particular Pinot Grigio, crafted in the Italian style of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the natural fruit characters of the grape.  A portion is also fermented in neutral oak barrels with lees stirring, which adds richness and body.  This all results in a Pinot Grigio that has a silky texture and crisp dry finish.  It is hard to resist the aromas of citrus and the floral notes, with ripe tropical fruits on the nose and palate.  There is the bright acidity you would expect in a Pinot Grigio, but an underlying mineral note that offers some structure to this full-bodied (yes, I said full-bodied!) wine.  Bright, fruity and food friendly.  No wonder people want to know how to get their hands on this!

1,400 cases produced; Recommend drinking through this year.
