How Young They Are

The freshman who will enter college next fall were born in 1985. We were 45 then, and many of us are their grandparents. Here are a few things that they do and do not know.

TVs have always had remotes, played tapes, and offered cable channels.

Total mysteries include typewriters, hard contact lenses, stove-top popcorn, Jordache jeans, Walkmans, Mork or Mindy.

Vietnam was 40 years ago, and when we entered college, that's how long ago was World War One.

Every year, the staff at Beloit College makes up a list like this to let the faculty know how old they are, and how young the freshmen are. That is to help professors not make allusions to forgotten rock bands like Kansas, Chicago, Boston, or Alabama.

On the Mend

Janet Bailey Kerner writes to say that she is rapidly recovering from her double-knee replacement surgery. Except for going up and down steps, she no longer needs support when walking.

She really loved getting notes and cards from classmates during her post-op phase, which occurred during a bitter phase of February weather.

Thanks to her daughter and several friends, especially Kris Hockenyos Tipps, Janet expects to be out gardening this spring and enjoying a trip to visit family in Colorado.

After the Fire

In March, 2003, Allan Stephens and family lost their home to fire. They lived in an apartment during reconstruction and finally returned to their home in early January of 2004. That 9 months of exile would bum me out, but not Allan:

"What a year--in some ways one of the best, yet one of the worst. Hmmm--...the best of times...the worst of times." Seems I heard that somewhere not too long ago. Family events were tops: daughter's graduation and wedding, niece's wedding, SHS reunion (all family, y'know). Some really special times. Now to see what this year brings... "Yesterday this day's madness did prepare..."

Allan's home address, phone, and e-mail remain the same. Good luck, Mr. Antrobus; after the fire comes ice!!

Denny Saner Remembered

Bill Newman writes:

"When I talked to Denny and his wife Karen last summer during the Reunion, he was undergoing cancer treatments. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Denny and I lived about 4 blocks apart in Springfield. We made many hunting trips during high school and got into lots of other troubles.

He was a good buddy and a neighbor too. We usually rode together to SHS and then circulated around Springfield in the evenings. After school, we each got involved with our own lives and families and didn't meet again till our 45th Reunion.

After last summer, I called him and also visited via his wife's e-mails. Denny had been treated for prostate cancer and beat it, but it later showed up elsewhere and he lost the battle. I'm glad we got to meet again after so many years."
