Sangamon Everest
Here's another curious Web site: County Highpointers,
which locates the geographical highpoint of every USA county. A
"highpoint" is not a cultural attraction or a good place to order
chilli and tamales; it is the highest point of altitude for said county.
Hiking to highpoints has become a popular pastime, and some hikers try
to score 4-5 counties in a single day. That's no problem in Indiana or
Illinois, but consider the challenge of Colorado or Montana!
On the site's home page, scroll down to the USA map and click on your
state of interest. You will see a list of county links, which take you
to more maps, pictures, and stories of intrepid hikers.
For Sangamon County,
the highpoint is 714 feet above sea level, located in the southwest
corner, near the town of Waverly. Click on the photo to see a classic image of rural Illinois, with all that rich, deep, dark soil.
