Robert Hamende

C. E. Welch sends the sad news that Bob Hamende died today, April 19, 2004. The obituary should appear in the Journal-Register tomorrow. I will post a copy when one becomes available.

My earliest memory of Bob is of playing baseball with him on Sunset Hill in Washington Park. He was an infielder and pitcher, a natural athlete who was quiet but he had a quick sense of humor. I always enjoyed talking with him at Reunions. He will be missed.

Addenda: Bob's brother, Marvin, died on Saturday, May 22. He was 71 and lived in Riverton, Illinois.

Remember Dating?

A story on dating rites and practices 50 years ago appears today in the Washington Post. The writer, Joe Vost, says that it's hard to explain to his 14-year-old granddaughter just how different social behavior was in those days:

"I was scared half the time. Girls frightened me. For one thing, they were taller than I was. I was afraid to ask them out on dates. Maybe they would say no. Why would bright, cheerful girls want to go out with this skinny kid (a deficiency I no longer suffer from)?"

Perhaps that echoes your experiences, and perhaps not. The full story may bring back some memories for you, sweet or sad. Comments are welcome!

Gerald Cohn Retirement

Some of the Butler crowd may remember Gerry Cohn '56, who lived on Bates Avenue and hosted many riotous poker parties during my misspent youth. Well, we all grow up in time.

Gerry took a law degree at U Chicago in 1964, practiced law in Springfield and then Madison County, and in 1981 he was appointed a federal magistrate judge for a district covering much of southern Illinois.

Gerry's daughter, Hope Abramov, was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1998. He plans to retire early in 2005 and pursue his interests in travel and archaeology.

A feature story on Gerry appears in the ISBA Bar News for March, 2004.

Bon voyage, Your Honor!
