Thank heaven for small miracles... [STUFF (New Zeland)] WASHINGTON: The United States says it has released three juvenile "enemy combatants" held at the US military prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and flown them to their home country. The three, ranging from 13 to 15 years old, were the only juveniles among 660 suspected Taliban and al Qaeda guerrillas being held without charge at the US naval base. Detention of the prisoners, especially the youngsters, has drawn major criticism from human rights groups and governments who have urged the United States to file charges against the detainees or release them. ... My comments: That leaves still over 650 people being held (indefinitely?!) at Guatanamo (I had no idea it was that many!). Apalling. UN takes—rather small—step towards recognizing same-sex partners [STUFF (New Zeland)] UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations took a cautious step yesterday in recognising gay and unmarried heterosexual partnerships among their employees by deciding to grant couples health and other benefits if their home country allows it. ... ...In the United States, the federal government would be asked for a ruling, and UN officials assumed the answer would be "no". My comments: A pretty big cop-out on the part of the UNwhy involve home country governments? I would think that the UN would have the authority to make its own decisions regarding benefits policies for its employees... At any rate, given the nature of the US's federal system of governemnt, I would think it would make more logical sense to ask the person's state... P.S.
