Add a Favicon to your URL

Add a Favicon to your URL: "

Admit it, you want one. You know, that cool little icon in your web browser address bar, just to the left of your URL. Well, I did too and now I've got one.

Here's how I did it. I took the following 32x32 graphic and opened it up in a graphics application.

I then shrunk it down to 16x16 and saved it as a Windows .ico file named favicon.ico. I dropped it into my images folder and Radio upstreamed it to my server.

I then edited my #homeTemplate.txt file, adding this bit of code in the HEAD section:

<link rel='Shortcut Icon' href='/images/favicon.ico'>

(Note. The above was updated to include '/images'. Thanks taterhead for catching the mistake!)

Republish the home page and now I'm somebody!

Preparations for Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre 4

Preparations for Trajectory Correction Manoeuvre 4: "Report for period 28 October to 19 November 2004

Rosetta continues to fly in cruise mode which it entered 17 October. The AOCS gyro-less estimator was activated on 4 November and has been running since, outside the control loop for validation. This activity required an AOCMS patch in RAM to prevent incorrect use of gyro-less estimator output by the FDIR when the gyro-less and gyro-stellar estimators are ON in parallel. So far, the performance of the gyro-less estimator is good."

HP quietly begins Web log experiment

HP quietly begins Web log experiment: "Hewlett-Packard Co. has become the latest IT vendor to dip its toes in the wild world of Web logging, or blogging. Over the last few weeks, a handful of developers in the company's software development group have quietly begun publishing their regular musings on such technical issues as service-oriented architectures and XML (Extensible Markup Language). But the company is now showing signs of following competitors like Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. and opening up its blogging efforts to a wider range of company employees."

Edirol from the USA

Edirol from the USA: "

The new R1

Several companies have come with MP-3 or MPEG-2 recorders designed for radio journalists. They are all based on the use of flash memory. This is the latest from a US company called EdiRol debuted at a Photo fair in Cologne in September. Price in the UK will under 400 pounds as from November. That makes it a lot cheaper than some of the competition.

The US$440 unit (street price in the US) includes two electret mics, a 64MB Compact Flash card, an optical-output jack, and 9 recording modes from 64kbps MP3 to 24-bit linear WAV. It can transfer a max-resolution 60 minute recording (908MB) to a PC over USB-2 in around 3 minutes.

It does seem crazy that with all the radio reporters out there, many have to resort to Mini Disc which is notoriously unreliable. Thanks to Oliver in Berlin for the update on the name - I originally called it the more logical Editrol - but, indeed, there is no 't'.

Not yet released as of November 16th 2004 when we rang the Dutch importer.

US$500 Comms Jacket

US$500 Comms Jacket: "
Engadget points out that as the Earth tilts some of us into colder climes, we begin to struggle with the reality that gloves make the operation of our various gadgets (like cellphones) a decidedly onerous task. Fortunately, the new Nike ACG COMMJacket includes a built-in two-way radio system that should help you work around this horrible state of being. Fitted with a speaker near your ear and a microphone near (duh) your mouth, the COMMJacket will allow you to simply tap your chest, Star Trek-style, and talk to your friends. Your journalist friends may think your're a lunatic, but what could be more stylish than this?

CNN: Here Come the Podcasters

Blogging meets pirate radio.

By Erick Schonfeld, November 12, 2004

How boring. That is the sentiment behind a budding new phenomenon among bloggers and others known as podcasting. Just as the 4,585,680 weblogs out there have opened up a whole new world of self-publishing, the podcasters hope to open up a whole new world of Internet audio broadcasting. Think of it as pirate radio for the blogosphere.

Podcasting gets its catchy name from the iPod music player. The idea is that you can subscribe for free to a show on the Internet (just like you can subscribe to your favorite blogs through an RSS feed), download it to your iPod, and then listen to it on the go. But you don't even need an iPod, because you can listen to podcasts on your computer as well.

Podcasting got its start just last summer when Adam Curry of MTV fame started his podcast, Daily Source Code, to rally software developers around improving the open-source podcasting software. (It turns out Curry is just as big a fan of technology as he is of music, having co-founded a few Web startups since his VJ heyday.) Now, in addition to the iPodder software that he helped kick off, there are at least half a dozen more. And this software has, in turn, given rise to hundreds of podcasts, with people recording daily talk shows on topics as diverse as technology, sports, news, and music.

Many of the early podcasters are bloggers such as Scripting News's Dave Winer and Engadget's Peter Rojas who want to add an audio component to their commentary, which has been mostly text until now. But what podcasting represents is the democratization of broadcasting. Anyone with a computer and a microphone can now try his or her hand at being a radio talk-show host or DJ, and can build an audience of thousands -- potentially millions.

Podcasting is not limited to audio. With Apple's latest color-screen iPod Photo devices, still images can be incorporated as well. (Engadget's podcast, which includes photos of the devices being reviewed, is the first to do so.) Can video be far behind? If podcasting takes off, it could roil the traditional radio and TV businesses just as weblogs are challenging traditional print media. Of course, podcasters who disseminate copyrighted songs or video clips might find themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit.

Nevertheless, this could be the beginning of how on-demand content will work on the Internet: You go to a podcast directory or program guide on the Web and pick your favorite shows, and then every time a new episode is posted, your computer (or maybe your TiVo (TIVO)) automatically downloads it. There might be millions of podcasts someday, so we will need some sort of ranking system (a download count or audience vote, for instance). At some point, for podcasting to survive and become mainstream, there will have to be an economic model to support it. Just like weblogs, podcasts will be able to profitably mine thousands of niche audiences that broadcasters today ignore. Perhaps the more popular podcasts will start incorporating ads into their shows or charging subscribers. It's a perfect forum for selling new music. Or they might even sell some of their clips to the broadcast radio networks themselves. Before that happens, though, podcasting will have to broaden from the hobbyist sensation it is today.

BBC 'podcasts' radio show

BBC 'podcasts' radio show: "The BBC has begun offering, on a trial basis, a download of the BBC Radio 4 history show 'In Our Time' in MP3 format. You can move the file directly to iTunes and synchronize it with your iPod or use a utility such as iPodderX to subscribe to the 'podcast' through an RSS feed and have it automatically saved and transferred to iTunes each time a new edition is available. The BBC has not said how long it will offer 'In Our Time' as an MP3 file, although it is soliciting feedback on the download page. "

Einführung von Blogs: Sechs Ratschläge

  1. Aktuell bleiben.
