I just finished reading Fluke, by Christopher Moore.
Ok, so imagine you're a noted marine biologist in your late 40's, working out of Maui researching humpback whales -- trying to understand why they sing. One day you're out on your boat making recordings and snapping ID photographs of humpack flukes, when you notice that the whale you're studying today has "Bite Me" scrawled on its fluke... thus starts a grand adventure.
This is not a serious book, though the author did his homework on whale science and represents it well. This is a silly, sarcastic story that is pure escapism. Moore has a great talent for casting interesting characters (or caricatures), and a special talent for dialogue. I laughed out loud several times while reading this book (much to the curiosity of my daughters).
A word of warning: there are a lot of penises in ths book. A few of them are human. This is not a book that I would give me kids to read. And yet -- it's great fun. Fantastic holiday escapist reading, and I highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to reading some of Moore's other books.
Next in the queue: God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian by Kurt Vonnegut.
