Here's an article in Salon about FBI memos that complain about treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo.

At least the FBI comes out and calls it what it is: torture. That's right, it's not the mealy-mouthed "abuse" term that the government and press have settled on using to describe torture at Abu Ghraib. This time they come right out and say it; we're torturing our prisoners.

Perhaps now that the election is over, Congress will take this seriously and do a real investigation into who gave the approval to torture prisoners. (but I'm not holding my breath)

This is sure to provoke some discussion about what the appropriate metrics are to rate universities...

Link thanks to this article in the NYT about the increasing global competition between universities to attract the best and brightest students.

Asteroid MN4 has a 1 in 62 chance of hitting the Earth in 2029, according to the JPL.

But don't panic yet; astronomers all over the world are tracking it closely now, and in the coming days, weeks and months a lot more data will be collected and an impact will most likely be ruled out.
