I finished reading God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian by Kurt Vonnegut.

Vonnegut has this funny way of writing from the first person, where you can never quite tell what's real and what's made-up. In this book, he goes on a series of "adventures" beyond this plane of existence by having Jack Kevorkian end his life then bring him back. While he's gone, he travels through the "tunnel of light" to the gates of Heaven and interviews dead people.

The book itself is a series of chapters, each of which represents one interview. Some of them are famous people, such as Adolph Hitler, or Isaac Newton. Many are "just folks."

It's a very quick read, but great fun and thought-provoking.

Next: The Stupidest Angel, by Christopher Moore (again).

NASA's JPL has ruled out the possibility that asteroid MN4 will impact the Earth in 2029 (or anytime in the 21st century, for that matter).

Here is the full story. It turns out that two researchers from the Spacewatch Observatory dug into the archives and found some older recordings of MN4 that significantly extended the data set and allowed them to more accurately predict its course.

This is a classic example of what scientific discovery has become: a data mining exercise. Come up with a hypothesis, then plow through the collected data archives of the field looking to disprove or improve the hypothesis.  It's not just astronomy; it's life sciences and every other science as well.

These are fascinating times we live in.
