The confirmation hearings of Alberto Gonzales are causing a fair amount of controversy this week because of his role in the torture and abuse of prisoners in Guantanamo and Iraq.

The ACLU made a Freedom of Information Act request for documents from the FBI and several other government and military branches. They got back some amazing stuff, posted on their web site.

It unfortunately got lost in the holiday and tsunami coverage, but there's a smoking gun here -- a memo from the FBI On-Scene Commander in Baghdad referring repeatedly to an Executive Order authorizing the abusive interrogation techniques.

The rest of the collection makes fascinating and scary reading too -- especially how scared the FBI is because military interrogators were impersonating FBI personnel.

Tell people about this, please. Don't expect Congress to do anything about it.
