On my way to Friday Harbor. During the winter, Washington State Ferries runs a weird schedule, with a ferry that leaves at 8:10pm on Friday and stops at Orcas and Friday Harbor, and the last ferry of the evening leaves at 8:25 and stops everywhere (taking 2 hours to get to Friday Harbor). I hate this schedule, because while in ideal conditions it takes 90 minutes to drive from Bellevue to the Anacortes ferry dock, in typical Friday night traffic it can take as much as two and a half hours. I couldn't leave until 6:00, so I was in the danger zone. I'm not exactly sure why, but I lucked out tonight, arriving at 7:50 in time to catch the early ferry.
The first part of the ferry ride takes us across an open strait, and when the wind blows (like tonight) the ferry can really get rocking. The first good list to starboard let loose a loud rattle. The frst thing that went through my mind is that we had run aground; it was that loud. But the boat kept going, rocking back to starboard, and I realized that it was just the wind and waves doing their thing. Not the usual lullaby ride.
The San Juan ferries have been sort of cursed the last couple of months; boats keep breaking down, and one did in fact scrape a rock at low tide on Christmas eve.
But it looks like I'm going to get there tonight after all, and at a decent hour.
