Billions of Networked Tentacles. AlwaysOn: Why don't you start by giving us your views on what's happening with the internet today and where it's headed in the near future.
Robert Metcalfe: (Mr. Metcalfe invented the Ethernet and founded 3Com. He is currently a general partner at Polaris Ventures.) As far as I can tell, the internet hasn't been set back by the bursting of... [AlwaysOn Network]
Here's a good interview of Robert Metcalfe by Tony Perkins of AlwaysOn (founder of Red Herring). Here's a quote pointing toward the space I cover:
AlwaysOn: When you talk about all of the embedded processors, do you mean sensors and actuators, things like that?
Metcalfe: Well, there's a space that I haven't quite got a name for, but it's a three-level space. At the bottom of that space are RFIDs [radio-frequency identifications], which are wireless ID collectors. Then, a little bit up from that level are wireless sensor networks, on which the nodes are more intelligent than just IDs. And then right up from that level are embedded control networks. That triple-layer space is one in which work has just begun. So, while the handheld version of the internet is moving out, right below that, this three-level space is also developing. What's a good word for that space?
