Here's some good news. Does that mean we've been doing our job in automation?

Productivity Rise Is Fastest in Two Years. Productivity rose at its fastest pace in two years in the third quarter, far more quickly than earlier predicted. By VIKAS BAJAJ. [NYT > Business]

Just received the news. ISA (the Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Association) has hired Patrick Gouhin as Executive Director. Gouhin will join ISA on 3 January 2006.

Gouhin is currently Chief Operating Officer with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The press release notes that in his 15-year tenure with AIAA, he was responsible for developing organizational strategies, launching numerous new ventures, enhancing the effectiveness of publishing and training programs, and conceiving strategic marketing and communications programs.

A quick tour of the AIAA Web site reveals an organization similar to ISA. Presuming COO is the #2 person, this position would be a step up for him, but landing him in an entirely different technology than he is used to dealing with. Don't see that his current situation is any different from ISA's currently, so there's nothing to indicate future new directions. Of course, working with a board that has annually rotating presidents will tend to inhibit some innovation at the top.

Jim Pinto's latest newsletter contains a good analogy of manufacturing industry in this century to agriculture in the last. For all you Chicken Littles out there, something to ponder.

I see Woodhead has released a "gateway", or as we used to say in the old days, a "protocol converter." This one, called Direct-Link Gateway for DeviceNet, connects a DeviceNet network to a serial network or device or an Ethernet network or device. It transfers I/O data cyclically between the networks. One of the most useful catalogs I had during my computer years was the "Black Box" catalog. These "black boxes" are still among the most useful little things around. This one will probably find a place in most DeviceNet shops.
