There are a few technology leaders in automation that I like to track, and one is National Instruments. And one technology I've been watching for a few years is ZigBee, the wireless, self-organizing sensor network. So, when I saw yesterday that NI has joined the ZigBee Alliance, I had to study the news. NI's roots are in test and measurement and it has developed highly sophisticated tools. The initial impetus to the link is NI's offering of tools for suppliers to test their ZigBee products. This will also be part of the RF and Wireless Communications Summit held in Austin, Texas during NI Week in August. Although ZigBee has its detractors (naturally), this development tells me not to discount it.

Anybody excited that Katie Couric is heading to CBS to be the Evening News anchor? Not me. It has nothing to do with gender. I quit watching most TV news 20 years ago. Especially local (Dayton, Ohio) news. I'm not getting into any liberal/conservative bias discussion. My problem was that there was no depth and all going for the spectacular. When some idiot stuck a microphone in the face of someone in California sitting if front of the rubble that was his house following a massive earthqake and asked "How do you feel?" I turned off network news. I used to watch CNN Headline news because it was quick, incisive, professional. But it changed into the Weather Channel format, so I quit that, too. I like NPR news, but since I seldom drive and tend to listen to radio just when I'm in the car (not to mention the trashing of Bob Edwards), I don't listen there, either.

I get news on the Web mostly through RSS feeds, but I also check Yahoo news and CBS Marketwatch occasionally. Then I can scan lots of things and dive in when I want more detail. News on the Web offers lots of links so you can get all the depth you need.
