The big tech news, of course, is the Microsoft offer to acquire Yahoo. Most commentators look at the consumer side--search plus ads. There are even reports of the mighty Google starting to slip already. There was an interesting article on Infoworld that I saw on RSS feed. I've gone to the site twice now, and the article has been pulled from the site. It's still featured on the home page, though. The thought was that what could be really valuable for Microsoft is the infrastructure (and the engineer it takes to run it). Think server farms. The software and expertise to run them. Then think hosted applications. Not just Google and Google docs. But also Amazon.com and some of its new offerings such as the S3 platform. Did you know that you (yes, you) can purchase cheap data storage at Amazon. The whole software-as-a-service model and the ability of a company to outsource much of IT seems to be gaining traction. Microsoft would be buying a heck of an infrastructure. Of course, other people are now scrambling to come up with financing to beat Microsoft's offer. This'll be interesting.
