Transpara and OSIsoft have an OEM relationship to embed the PI System historian in Transpara's Visual KPI product that delivers data to desktop and mobile browsers. They say that customers can now trend KPI status and calculations by adding time series capabilities even if their back-end data source is not time series-based.

There has been an interesting conversation going on at the ISA SP95 committee mail list. The committee is at one of those places where it's achieved a lot but needs to move to another level. Much of the discussion revolves around user input--versus the usual supplier input. Many on the committee have been system integrators and are close to users. Some have voiced the idea that users are just too busy these days given the cuts in engineering that management has made to get deeply involved. Many are lurkers on the list. There is much truth to that sentiment. But I had an opportunity to interview several P&G engineers to get their view on standards. The interview is now posted at Automation World. I hope this spurs more action on the standards front. The ideas, if implemented, will make manufacturing more competitive.

Did you know that you can use Google to search within a Web site? For example, if you search "Gary Mintchell's Feed Forward", you'll get this blog as the top return. (it has to be the top return to work, I think) Then at the bottom of the page there's a link that says, "search within." Click on that with a term you're looking for and you have it. I put Technorati search on my page years ago, but I don't think it works as well as it used to.

We've had a lot of rain following 10-15 inches of snow in the area, so lots of low-lying areas are under water. The front page of the Dayton Daily News features a large, color picture of a guy standing on the hood of his submerged SUV calling on his mobile phone. The barricade closing the road is clearly in the picture behind the vehicle. You never know how deep the water is. He obviously thought (OK, he wasn't thinking, he's a guy, the female readers are thinking) that his SUV could get through anything. Except the water was up to the bottom of the door windows. I can hear his family and friends now...

Say Hi to spring.
