Tony commented on my magazine post that some things are better on the Web. Actually, that's my point and the reason I'm starting a product blog. He brought up the point of digital SLR cameras. Precisely. It's the Amazon model (or Engadget, maybe), where someone writes a review then others can review or "grade" or share experiences. This put PC Magazine out of business as a print publication. It had long since moved from a technology magazine to a product roundup magazine. In this day, product roundup articles in print just don't make it.

When I broke in to this space, the one I worked for was known as the product roundup book. PR people loved it, but readers didn't. A reader told me at a trade show once that reading that magazine was like reading a catalog. [ouch] Ever notice that there are no product roundup magazines left in our space? Even the product tabloids are gone. But you still want to know about products, right? So, we're finding a way to report new things and let you comment. We'd hope that marketers would watch the posts and see what comments are posted. It'd give them invaluable product development advice--or let them head off some bad experiences. Stay tuned.
