In Restoration Movement churches we have practiced "speaking when the Bible speaks and being silent when the Bible is silent." An older man once said to me, "I believe when the Bible speaks, we ought to shut up. It's when the Bible is silent that we must learn how to speak."
The Bible speaks on so much of life that it's difficult to find the Bible silent on matters of faith. It is a lifetime of listening to begin to fathom the mysteries of God's amazing presence, kingdom, grace, power, love, and wisdom. This blog is about a journey and listening and I hope we can share together what we've learned. Feel free to comment and share your story and invite me to your blog.
This morning my covenant group read Ps 42 together four times. It was our feeble attempt at beginning Lectio Divina. Lectio is Latin for reading and Divina is a Latin word for God, Divine. We are reading to contemplate God on his own terms. I was moved by the language of depression. "Why is my soul downcast within me? Why am I so sad?" The words, "Yet will I trust Him," resound with the grace that moves in spite of depression, fear, sadness. It's not outside of or after depression that God moves but in it. Yet will I trust him. In my deep despair, this deep calls to God's deep. Deep calls to deep.
