George Hincapie won today's stage of the Tour de France. Hincapie is the only guy to ride on Lance Armstrong's team in all of the last seven Tours de France. Despite all of his work and help to Armstring, this was the first time he has ever won a stage on the Tour. Armtrong still has the onverall lead in the race.

Trinity Site, July 16, 1945 [posted by Troy]
Saturday marked 60 years since the first Atomic Weapon was detonated. Here is a part of an ABC news article about the anniversary:

Scientists working at Trinity site as part of The Manhattan Project created the nuclear device used in the test on July 16, 1945. That successful detonation led to the construction of the two atomic bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of people in Japan in August 1945, essentially stunning Japan into surrender and ending World War II.

Hiroshima survivors also marked the occasion. The 20th century is a conundrum of great achievements and horrific consequences.

Steroids or no steroids [posted by Troy]
Derrek Lee hit another home run today, which I believe puts him in the lead for the majors. This article says that once the summer temps started to rise, so did the number of home runs. It notes that home runs may be down slightly, but they are not down much. In fact, they may not be down any less than is expected. So, this begs the question about the impact that steroids had on the game. Did it or didn't it matter?

Mason's [posted by Troy]
I saw this article about Mason jewels being stolen, which made me wonder about Freemasons, shriners, and those lodge people. In my research, I found this page about Freemasons from the University of Virginia. It has a scholarly history of the Freemasons. Their mythology says that they started with the building of Solomon's temple, but that can't be verified. More than likely, they started in the middleages. The "modern" movement started in 1717. This then got me thinking about the Simpson's episode with the Stonecutters, where Homer is the Chosen One and Patrick Stewart is Number One.
