Remember this fact [posted by Troy] All kinds of people justify tons of stuff by giving a nod to the lawless, horrible society in which we live. We need more prisons, our schools are failing, we need more police, but remember this, our murder rate is at a 40 year low. Overall violent crime is at a 30 year low, but there are many people who don't want you to believe this. They want us to live in fear. The news highlights every crime, no matter how large or small, in bright screaming letters. So, don't give into the hype. Interestingly enough, the South had 43% of the country's murders but it only has 36% of its population. Could there be a link to availability of weapons? Ah, probably not.

Miers [posted by ZelderBar] Well, we just don't know what we are going to get with Harriet Miers. She can't use the same don't ask, don't tell sort of strategy that allowed John Roberts to skate by. The thing with Roberts is that he actually had judicial experience. Miers has nothing, so people want to know where she stands, especially where she stands on abortion. The trouble is that the president can't tell us or she is doomed to fail. If she supports a woman's control of her own body, then the Christian right wing (Bush's base) will be up in arms and oppose her. If she opposes abortion, then the Democrats will block her in every way possible. So, now, the administration is playing a game of Russian Roulette with the Court. Maybe the headline of this Slate article puts it best: The Many Faces of Harriet: Miers supports, opposes, and is neutral on Roe, all within 24 hours!.
