HTC MDA IV on T-Mobile Germany

MDA4-2.jpg imageHTC continues to produce amazing smartphones¡Xyet they're still treated like a second-class producer here in the States. Check out this just-announced MDA IV: on the outside it looks like the i-Mate JAM, but inside it has a QWERTY keyboard and a twist-around screen. Add in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a really fast 520MHz processor and it basically becomes the GSM phone of my dreams (the only thing it could do better would be to operate on a real 3G network). T-Mobile Germany will definitely get the unit and you should expect it to be a popular import here if no carrier gives it a proper launch¡Xbut they should, because I want one.

Gizmodo Japan: Famicom TV Remote Control

famiclaw_sm.jpg imageThe retro gaming phenomenon in Japan is not limited to being able to play your old games on new systems. No, here, it¡¦s the style of gaming that also gets special treatment. Why be limited to an old console when a few tries at this UFO Catcher found in Akihabara can get you a TV remote shaped like a classic Famicom (what the NES was called here) controller. If you¡¦re feeling really lucky, go for the big one: a tricked-out tissue box made to look like the console itself¡Xit also acts as a holder for the TV remote/controller. Time to get some claw practice in!

JVC Everio GZ-MC500: 3CCD Hard Disk Camera

everioccd3.jpg imageJVC has been showing off a hot new model of in their Everio line of camcorders called the GZ-MC500. While it shares the same 4GB internal hard drive as the other Everio, it also has a 5-megapixel resolution using a 3CCD sensor group, making it the world's smallest 3CCD camera. Add in a 10x optical zoom and a flip-up flash and it looks like the GZ-MC500 will be the one to beat when it launches in March¡Xif you've got the 1,500£á to spend on it (about two grand American).

Even better, JVC says they'll be offering models with 8 and 10GB hard drives soon. This is exactly the sort of camera we have been looking forward to¡Xnow where is every one else's model?

Yahoo Japan launches blog tool. Xeni Jardin: Yahoo! Japan has released a free blogging software service:
Yahoo Japan, owned mostly by Softbank and partly by Yahoo, on Tuesday launched a test, or "beta," version of Yahoo Japan Blogs, a free service that lets users post blogs and up to 2GB of images, comment on other blogs, and associate their blogs with animated representations of users known as avatars.

(...) The launch could have implications for Yahoo users in the United States, too. Yahoo's Asian blogging services are striking in that they precede any offerings or previews by Yahoo for its flagship portal. And Yahoo's lateness to the blogging game is all the more notable thanks to significant investment by Yahoo's main portal competitors, including Google, MSN and AOL.

Link (Thanks, sebFlyte)

Reader JR Conlin adds,

I'm sure one of the reasons that this hasn't gotten as much exposure is because of the fact that few folks read Korean, but Yahoo! Korea has had blogs for over a year now, and they're pretty popular. Link, and here is an article talking about the launch. I also probably should point out that Yahoo! and Yahoo! Japan are seperate companies (Link), where as Yahoo! Korea isn't. So in some respects, Japan has finally caught up with the rest of the company. I'm not sure why they haven't released an english version yet, but I'm sure there's fairly good reasons. (Probably abuse related.)

Robosapien V2, RoboRaptor, and RoboPet Release Dates

roboraptor.jpg imageGadgetMadness confirms the release date of WowWee's next set of Robots and I have to say I'm disappointed. While I'm not looking forward to paying $200 for a Robosapien V2, I'm most certainly not looking forward to waiting until December before I can get my hands on one. The RoboRaptor [pictured] will launch for $100 in August, which might sooth me, although I may wait to go cheap in October and get one of the ambiguously named Robotpets for $70 instead. Or I'll do what I did with the first Robosapien and get one for my brother, then steal it from him when I go home for the holidays.

Hitachi FLORA-ie MX1: Pocket PC Powerhouse

hitachi_mx1.jpg imageHitachi has announced a new Japanese PDA called the FLORA-ie MX1, a 400MHz Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003SE. The most stand-out feature of the MX1 is definitely the Zaurus-like slide-out keyboard which is certain to make it lusted after by many Western Pocket PC fans, who have been privy to integrated keyboards before, but nothing quite the same. As a big fan of the Zaurus form factor (and less so the Linux environment it runs) I'd say it's a pretty appealing design. I hope Hitachi considers bringing it to the US.

It's beefy, too, with a 4-inch VGA screen, built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and SD and CF slots¡Xeverything a Windows pocket-sagger should be.

Motion Sensitive Hello Kitty Phone Game

emoty_kitty.jpg imageSomewhere in time, a bunch of children marched for twenty years through nail biting straight A and amphetamine-fueled electrical engineering finals to collapse at the top of their heap. For years they toiled to learn which circuits monitored motion, how sensors could be made that could detect human touch, and have to make liquid and crystals display bright, vibrant colors. And then, in their final service to humanity, they created the Siemens CX70 EMOTY handset and loaded it with Hello Kitty My Best Friends, a collection of interactive mini-games that let us shake, stroke, and smoosh Hello Kitty through a variety of activities that are guaranteed to keep us diverted for moments to come.
