Minister considers public funding for alternative medicine
New Zealand Health Minister Annette King is considering a report which says safe and effective alternative treatments should be publicly funded. Ms King said yesterday complementary and alternative medicine was already widely used, and a survey had shown that in 2002 one in four people visited an alternative health practitioner. She has received a report from the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Complementary and Alternative Health on alternative medicine and treatment, which took three years to complete.
"The committee considers treatments proven to be safe, efficacious and cost effective should be publicly funded, and it also suggests better research infrastructure is needed to maximise benefits available for this area of care," Ms King said.
"I am now giving careful consideration to the committee's advice and have asked the ministry to look at how the recommendations may be able to contribute to improving health outcomes."
