RA Linked to Heart Disease: We Knew This
Rheumatoid Arthritis Raises Heart Death Risk - Study
A large part of this study falls into the "Duh" category - and it will probably serve to alarm the uninformed with needless worry.
The statement "Rheumatoid arthritis seems to raise the risk of silent heart disease in patients" is one that we at the Wellness Club agree with. This part isn't "new news." What is a little perplexing is that the article seems to be saying that there is some "mystery" as to why the RA/heart disease connection exists, but it's really no mystery at all.
Dr. Myatt published a newsletter a four years ago in which she talked about the risk indicator hs-CRP or (Highly Sensitive C Reactive Protein AKA High Speed C Reactive Protein - it depends on the lab - both names are correct) and how this finding relates to cardiovascular disease. hs-CRP is a lab test that shows subtle inflammation throughout the body. This inflammation can come from virtually any source, and rheumatoid arthritis is a prime candidate for causing inflammation. In fact, high levels of CRP are one of the hallmarks of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Inflammation causes problems in the blood vessels when the blood vessels react by trying to protect themselves by applying healing "patches" of cholesterol. This eventually leads to the development of atherosclerosis - a dangerous cardiovascular disease condition. With very greatly elevated hs-CRP levels those suffering from RA are undoubtedly at higher risk for cardiovascular disease - Duh!
Then there is the statement of conjecture, "It's possible that people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis have so much pain in their joints and are receiving so many painkillers that they either don't feel the chest pain in the same way as those without rheumatoid arthritis or don't appreciate its importance," that was made by the leader of this study. We would also ask whether the use of cox-2 inhibitor drugs such as Vioxx or Celebrex might play any part in the risk. We are guessing that the answer would be a very definite yes! Conventional Big Medicine and Big Pharmacy do really seem to be powerless to treat most conditions with anything other than drugs which simply mask the symptoms instead of addressing the cause.
Then there is the outright mis-statement: "It causes chronic pain and disability and there is no cure" says this article, referring to the disease rheumatoid arthritis. To this we say "Balderdash!" There is no need for this condition to cause pain and disability, and it should never be considered incurable. Dr. Myatt has a large number of very happy and satisfied patients who no longer suffer from the effects of rheumatoid arthritis, and who no longer must consume the toxic offerings of Conventional Big Medicine and Big Pharmacy to remain symptom-free.
