Experts Advise Ban on Free In Vitro Fertilization for Obese Women

This article raises a couple of different points. First, for those in love with the idea of socialized, free-for-everybody, government supplied, publicly funded medicine, this is a demonstration of the power that this kind of system gives to the government: the power to give, or the power to deny - based on whatever criterion is set by some nameless, faceless bureauocracy and usually not subject to appeal. This week it is fat women - next week it might be women who smoke. The week after that? Maybe women with depression, women who are too old, or women with alternate or unpopular religious views. Better to stick with the current hard, cold, apolitical system of "If you can come up with the money for it you can have whatever you want."

Then, there is the concept that the NHS has recognized that obesity in women is a complicating factor to conception and a danger to both fetus and mother. Their statement that obesity should be addressed before infertility really is a correct one - just expressed in the wrong manner.

Are obese women any less deserving of the gift of fertility and children? Of course not! Are obese women and their fetuses at greater risk due to their obesity? Of course they are! Is the NHS correct in denying obese women fertility services paid for by public funds based upon their obesity? Hmmm... you decide!

In the meantime, rather than spending huge amounts of money on unproven fertility services, obese women wanting to conceive might spend a little time with an alternative medicine practicioner like Dr. Myatt who can help sort and correct out the reasons for both the obesity and the infertility. Contrary to what the NHS implies, it is not just all about diet and exercise to lose weight - there is much more at play and a good holistic physician can be a Godsend at sorting out and correcting these problems!

My Thoughts...

Nurse Mark

P.S. From Dr. Myatt:
Why should the government be paying for ANY fertility treatments for ANYONE? Fertility is not a health issue per se, and I believe our money could be better spent on people who need medical care, not just "making babies" care. As far as obesity is concerned, being seriously overweight is a proven cause of obesity. Again, why should you and I pay for fertility treatments for fatties? If you want to get pregnant, lose the excess weight. Period. That's my ten cents worth and I'm glad I said it!
