Ego is an illusion. Sometimes it is an illusion we show to others; to hide that which we don't like about ourselves or embellish that which we do. It comes at a price: fear of discovery or false hopes of discovery; heightened sense of inadequacy or of adequacy; and the effort required to keep the image up. It also means that it is harder for others to truly know us; and therefore to truly appreciate us.
Other times & more devastatingly, it is an illusion we show ourselves. Devastating because if we are not successful in hiding ourselves from ourselves, the reality will gnaw at us. Devastating because if we are successful in hiding ourselves from ourselves then we cannot know or truly appreciate ourselves.
