McGill is a board member of the area's homeowner's association and the organization's official Webmaster. He said one of his primary concerns has been helping residents learn more about the neighborhood's complicated deed restrictions.

What may be viewed by some as a dispute about whether or not to build the community center at its newly projected cost of approximately $5.4 million is, in my opinion, about something much more fundamental than this one proposed project and its cost. It is about the expectations, faith and reliance that members of homeowners associations ("HOAs") have, or rightfully should have, in their governing boards.

Lt. Alan Laitsch, who oversees Paradise Valley's patrol division, said property crimes such as burglary, theft, mail theft and criminal damage, are typically lower in gated communities because the chance for opportunity is far less. Laitsch, who has been with the department since 1988, has seen a definite drop in crime at Finesterre, which originally was not gated.

The plan is called 'traffic calming.' It involves building things at the intersection that will slow drivers down. St. Johns County unveiled the plan last summer. It starts with a neighborhood asking the county for help. A homeowner's association or a group of 10 residents can ask the county for 'traffic calming.'

A homeowners' association violated a Redondo Beach condominium owner's rights by not allowing her to keep a dog she says is necessary for "psychological comfort and companionship," claims a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

She has heard that her drying habits have been discussed at a homeowners association meeting, but no one has contacted her. “I think they shouldn’t be allowed to restrict this,” she said. “It’s not very environmentally friendly.” A lawyer friend suggested that if the issue comes to a head, she should fly an American flag from her clothes-hanging pole. A federal law that took effect last year prohibits homeowners associations from restricting residential displays of the flag.
