5 Asian women entrepreneurs savor success

 

Filipina Yolanda Ong, president and CEO of Campaigns and Grey is a pioneer in advocacy and social marketing in the advertising industry in the Philippines.

After 10 years of working for advertising agencies in Manila and Hong Kong, Ong founded her own company in Manila. Amid great political and economic turmoil, Ong took the big risk of being an entrepreneur with hopes of using marketing tools to effect social change. Now, her company is one of the busiest advertising agencies in the Philippines, with accounts like Procter & Gamble, Del Monte, Universal Robina, San Miguel Corp., among others.

"I sell shampoo for a living, but the real challenge is to sell ideas and values," said Ong.

 

  

Fifth Meeting of the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy: Enhancing International Cooperation on Biomass 

 

Arno Tomowski, on behalf of John Mitchell, Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA), stated that the challenge is to reduce deaths from indoor air pollution, which now amount to 5000 each day. He indicated that PCIA’s goal is to increase the use of clean, reliable and affordable cooking methods. He stated that PCIA emphasizes the use of flexible methods in accomplishing their goals, and the need for clearly-articulated goals. He outlined some of the PCIA’s activities, which include developing tools and resources; building capacity in priority areas; and organizing social marketing workshops and regional health and exposure workshops. He encouraged participants to raise awareness about indoor air pollution, reduce exposure to it, ensure capacity building of local entrepreneurs, and test, improve and market their products.

 

  

Training workshop for chemical sellers held at Oda [Ghana]

 

About 60 chemical sellers drawn from the Birim North and South districts have attended a week's care-shop training at Akim Oda designed to equip them with skills in the management of pharmaceutical services in their communities.

The care-shop programme, which was organized by the Ghana Social Marketing Foundation (GSMF), took the participants through franchise concept, business and entrepreneurship development, managing simple ailments of common occurrence and drug management among other topics. Mr Daniel Mensah, General Manager of GSMF, said their mission was to improve the quality of pharmaceutical service delivery to a large number of Ghanaians...

 

 

Report highlights community perceptions about healthy eating and physical activity

 

The findings are included in a report commissioned by Wichita's Health and Wellness Coalition. Entitled "Community Comparisons and Common Language," the study compares what other communities are doing to improve physical activity and healthy eating and how Wichitans perceive the issues in their own lives.

 

The focus group study follows an earlier report...related to social marketing and obesity..The report reviewed the literature related to social marketing and obesity. It also provided recommendations for organizations considering long-term strategies for reducing obesity in targeted populations, especially for grant-making organizations.

 

 

Call to action from nutrition groups

 

A "Call to Action" is the theme of the first national public health nutrition and physical activity conference to be hosted by Agencies for Nutrition Action (Christchurch May 23 – 25) with funding from the Ministry of Health and SPARC.

 

International and New Zealand keynote speakers will deliver presentations and research on such themes as what counts as evidence for action; behaviour change, social marketing strategies and programmes based on the wider environment and its effect on nutrition and physical activity.
