A difference of opinions
The Times is carrying a scathing piece on the stripping away of privacy in Britain. Philip Johnston's article quotes the Home Secretary Dr John Reid when he said,
"Sometimes we may have to modify some of our own freedoms in the short term in order to prevent their misuse by those who oppose our fundamental values and would destroy all of our freedoms."
This seems to be in complete contradiction to the opinion of Peter Hustinx, the European Data Protection Supervisor, who says,
"It is a misconception that protection of privacy and personal data holds back the fight against terrorism and organised crime."
I know which opinion I favour.
