It's a Good Life

On Tuesday the market was down 1.2%, Wednesday was a nothing day, and this morning it is up +1%. The market seems to be in the roller coaster mode. I have a new stock that I will probably boot out before the morning is over---it will undoubtedly complete its 8% decline.

I'm having fun (success) with my four tutor students---three of them happen to be great guys going into 9th grade. One is having to read Lord of the Flies, which I have never read. I was in high school when it came out and my mother deemed it inappropriate, and I simply never gave it another thought. These many years later, I don't disagree with her assessment. I object to using children to demonstrate evil and the thin veneer of civilization. However, that's probably what makes it an effective book. At any rate, I'm finding it to be a can't-up-down book. Yet, it is unnerving.

Yesterday morning Michael D. Williams spoke at our Commonwealth North Permanent Fund Study Committee (husband says, "and why are you studying that, yet again?"). Mike Williams is Chief Economist for the Department of Revenue, Alaska. He was great---can an economist be entertaining and interesting, absolutely yes. He has served all over the world---Saudi Arabia, Poland, etc, etc. and came to Alaska looking for a change of pace. He certainly knows oil economy. He talked about Alaska production amounts, the future production levels, oil price and where it will be/go in the next three to five years, OPEC and its world and doings, the huge viability of oil shale, etc. Our usual hour meeting lasted for nearly two hours. Over the years I have loved Commonwealth's small, in-depth study groups. I hear experts on the topic that normally I would never get to hear speak, the information is comprehensive, the discussions are thought provoking, and the groups are small so everyone can participate if they so choose. Farah and I had a similar hope, but on a smaller scale, for the World Affairs Council.

I ended the long day by taking an old friend, who now lives in Salem, Oregon, to dinner at Orso's. We had a great visit as we ate and strolled around downtown.
