The Week That Was--7/6 - 7/10/07
This was written last Sunday night. This time it sat on my desk as a promotion from sitting on the floor. Here it is a week later.
THE MARKET
Another roller coaster week. For the week the indexes ended up: Dow 0.4%; Nasdaq 1.3%; S&P 500 1.4%.
RETAILS SALES
Retail sales for July were OK but nothing great. Sale promotions kept people doing some buying (Nordstrtom's preseason sale) which cut profit margins. (In other words---reduce the price of the item, make less per item. Did they sell enough additional items to more than make up the less amount charged for each item? Evidently not---just enough to hold their own.)
Teenagers weren't buying during July except at Zumiez. (I wonder what the teens were doing rather than spending money at retailers except for Zumiez ? Is Zumiez a listed company? Have I been missing something?)
OIL
Crude oil was down to $71.47. The price fell on concerns that the credit crunch could slow Global economic growth. (Filled the car yesterday @ $2.92 per gallon. I didn't realize the tank held so much gasoline!)
