Kenilworth Today - World-class race walking comes to Victoria Park in Leamington this weekend in an event which could be crucial to town hopes of hosting the sport's 2007 European Cup.
The second staging of the Royal Leamington Spa Junior Cup provides the highlight of this year's UK and European Athletics association-backed Leamington Spa Grand Prix of Race Walking tomorrow (Saturday).
It will pit the cream of young British hopefuls against their finest counterparts from across Europe and beyond, with Sussex 16-year-old Nick Ball of the Steyning club likely to face strong competition over 10 kilometres in the men's race.
Among the athletes to watch out for are highly-ranked Hungarian Sandor Racz, American champion Zac Polinger and strong French, Belgian and Danish contingents.
The junior women's ten kilometre field is headed by Ireland's 2003 World Youth silver medallist Anne Loughnane.
The British challenge will be led by Jenny Gagg (Kingston Upon Hull), part of the team which contested last year's IAAF World Race Walking Cup, and Rebecca Mersh (City of Sheffield AC), a 5km AAA's bronze medalist at the age of just 15 in Manchester.
