Extras for XP. Robust as it is, Microsoft Windows XP is still just an operating system - a stable platform for the applications and utilities that make a PC worth using. New to the market are some applications that enhance the Windows XP experience. We decided to take a look at some to see if they're worth adding. Our first utility builds on one advantage that Microsoft has been touting: that the OS makes working with photos much easier. Windows XP's Photo Wizard lets even newbies connect a scanner or digital camera to a PC and automatically acquire images. When you want to share these images, simply right-click them to a zipped folder and e-mail them. [frogware weblog]
It's not a bug, it's a feature. IT'S AN OLD STORY: Developer writes code. Code taps vendor API. Vendor changes API without properly documenting the effects of the change. Developer gets burned. Such was the case during our recent performance testing of Windows XP (see "Waiting for Windows XP," Oct. 29). It seems that Microsoft decided to change the default behavior of certain MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) for the new Windows, with the net result being a significant change in how SQL Server database connections are established. Instead of using Named Pipes as the Network Library, as MDAC does in Windows 2000, MDAC 2.7 -- the version used in Windows XP -- defaults to TCP/IP. [frogware weblog]
C# for Java Programmers. C# (pronounced "C-Sharp") is often regarded as the other Java, created by Microsoft in the aftermath of the demise of J++. Taking some of J++ from Visual J++ (that's also in J# ) and combining it with its long-standing use of C++ (i.e., Visual C++), Microsoft created C#. With the backing of Hewlett-Packard and Intel, the language is becoming a standard. [frogware weblog]
