This quicktime VR of Times Square really puts you in the middle of the celebration. In fact in 1988 I stood in this exact same spot for MTV's celebration festivities, live.

Lara Hayhurst: "He exclaimed that in no way, under no circumstances, was a small fish allowed to pass through security, regardless of what the ticket agents said."

Being back in the states, if only for a few days, really helped me re-appreciate just how wonderful the country is. I found that I really have missed alot of america's uniqueness. Little things, like how a waiter introduces his/herself and announces that (s)he'll be 'taking care of you tonite'. Sitting on a bench and chatting with a stranger, who is genuinely interested in where you are from and who you are.

The american culture of friendliness and openess. It's not really something that can be described with words.

There were several experiences when I was in west palm beach florida obtaining my pilot's license that inspired codification:

It felt wonderful to discuss the president in the heart of Bush country. My opinions were treated with respect in every conversation, which were stimulating and thought provoking.

I exercised my rights as a us citizen by walking into a gun shop. We spent over an hour fondling many types of handguns, from dirty harry canons to sub miniature saturday night specials. We rented a Glock 9 mm and were promptly handed the weapon, 200 rounds and enough ear and eye protectors for the whole group. I admit that I secretly took pleasure in blowing holes in the target, which represented a distinctly mid-eastern looking figure holding a machine gun. I'd never done that before.

I watched people living out the american dream enjoying beating a path to their own success. Entrpeneurs who thought nothing of driving 8 hours to pick up a customer.

And what other country in the world has happy hour; two drinks for the price of one?

Above all, most folks in the US have a positive mind set and an optimistic outlook on life. Something I no longer detect at all in the netherlands, were I spend most of my time, and it appears to be a disturbing trend in the rest europe.
I don't know if its in the water or subliminally piped through cable tv. But it is certainly a much more pleasurable way of living life in times of economic uncertainty, a problem experienced by all nations.

Vint Cerf: "The internet is a reflection of our society and that mirror is going to be reflecting what we see," he said. "If we do not like what we see in that mirror the problem is not to fix the mirror, we have to fix society."

Barbara Hall: "You're alive. Do something. The directive in life, the moral imperative was so uncomplicated. It could be expressed in single words, not complete sentences. It sounded like this: Look. Listen. Choose. Act."
