Scoble and Son Depart!
About six this morning Robert and Patrick rallied for the journey to the airport. They were flying out at the crack of dawn on SWA. They had been here for what seemed like the shortest week in history.
I had encountered Robert about 9 months ago just prior to our meeting up first at Gnomedex, and then at PopTech, and we have become great friends. I had not met Patrick, but had seen some of his pictures, and from Robert's description of him, I knew that he must be something. Robert had told me that Patrick was worried about flying, given the aftermath of 9/11, and the worries that go through a little boys head.
We had a blast, and my wife, was totally entranced by young Patrick. Today upon their return to California, Patrick called to tell Mrs. Jan that they had gotten home safely and that she need not worry. When I was 8, I doubt that the idea of flying cross country in a day occurred to me, and certainly calling back to tell someone that I had made it certainly didn't.
Patrick shared some keen insights with me about life, including the real importance of Sponge Bob.
As Dave and I traded e-mail last night, meeting Patrick helps keep the important parts of life in perspective.
Now Robert heads to NOLA for TechEd and a rendezvous with Ernie, another truly great American, and in the meantime, I have been trying to concoct a scheme by which I will be with them at Nacho Mamma’s on Thursday at 5.
