Wow, I'm sooo psyched, this is the first time I've seen something I wrote show up in my News Aggregator. :)

Steve Hooker. Cannon's new autofocus, 2 Mp, movie-mode entry level camera. SRP = $300. Sweet. Add a 20 Gb hard drive and it would be perfect. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

Security is a pain. My ThinkPad is reliable enough that I hadn't typed the BIOS password in months and thus didn't know it when I needed it yesterday. I was informed that there is no way to recover the machine or the contents of the drive in this situation, short of sending it back to the factory. As much as the cypherpunks like to complain about key recovery, in this case it would have been helpful. (After 24 hours I remembered where the password was written down.) Raph Levien says I'm oversimplifying the cypherpunks' position (which is true) but there still aren't any obvious solutions. [Hack the Planet]

NY Times: "My experience with students' computers tells me that the vast majority of them have at least a few spyware applications on their computers, and they're usually shocked when I point them out," he said. "College students, of course, aren't particularly choosy about the software they install."
[Scripting News]
Let's please note that this article refers to Windows systems. It's a great money-maker, from a consultants point of view. "Hey look at all this software that's spying on you, want me to de-install it for you?" WTH, we're paid by the hour.
Alternately, it's a big waste of money (From this consultant's viewpoint, anyways) and time. It's one of those times that I'm glad the Mac is still something of a "niche". In fact, one challenge I would put out to Mac Developers:
Start making tools that tell us what our machines are doing. NOW. before we start having to deal with more of this crap, once the Mac starts really building numbers, and the spyware guys start deciding it's worth their while....

Boston Dragon Boat Festival
Just got back a couple of hours ago from the Boston Dragon Boat Festival. It was fun, fun was had by all, Lillian really enjoyed the Cambodian story dancing.

It always happens here
Sheila Lennon blogs yesterday's shootings at the Providence Journal. It can't happen to us, here in this quiet place. But it has. [Doc Searls Weblog]
You know, I can't help but recall a calvin and Hobbes strip when I read this.
"We always think that these things happen to somebody else, but we forget, that to everyone else, we are 'Somebody Else.'"
I find that I go through life with something of a It always happens here. kind of philosophy. I check the exits, keep an eye out, think of "what if". It's actually saved my ass a couple of times, but that's back when I was living a bit more dangerously. I also find that it really doesn't impair your ability to have fun, as long as you approach it right.
(No, I'm not one of those morbid little Death-Mods we call "Goths" now. :))

Curse you Doc!
Those TiBooks cost so much for us mere mortals because Doc Searls treats 'em like they're disposable. [Hack the Planet]
Pardon me while I roll on the floor laughing for a bit. I think doc needs an iBook. The 14" screen model is pretty sweet, and iBooks are very tough. I had an original Tangerine model (with the handle) take a 7' slam into blacktop without so much as waking from sleep.
That Tangerine took so much physical abuse from me, that I used to joke about putting it's picture up on the web with a listing of the abuse it took. Of course I could use a stock picture of an iBook, since there was nothing wrong with it.
Supposedly the new units are twice as tough; I'll believe that when I see one fired out of a howitzer. :)
