Have you ever Googled someone? You meet someone new, and then conduct your own personal background check on the internet. Quite frankly it gives me the creeps thinking that someone out there is checking up on me. I don't really have anything to hide, but the whole prospect is quite disconcerting. Fortunately, my real name is not that unique, so folks in widely varying walks of life show up when anyone Googles me. A double-edged sword... On one hand, I can get lost in the noise. On the other, the mind of our hypothetical detective can run wild, especially if one of those same-named individuals is into something unseemly. I've heard that employers are starting to look people up on the web as a first check on them. You could lose a date or a job because of indiscriminate Googling. Hell, you may already have!
I'm fairly certain that my ex-girlfriend Googled me after we first met. She used my website as something of an icebreaker. She said she had come across the site and noticed that the author had the same name as me. Considering the fact that I only mention myself at the bottom of the page in fine print, I was dubious, but I was receptive to getting to know her so I let it slide. At the time I was caught up in the euphoria of the beginnings of a new relationship, so internet privacy issues were the furthest from my mind. However, now that the Haze of Love has lifted, I'm seriously freaked out.
