fantasizing about a 200gb portable data-store.

product want rant. :)

i'm in the market for a rugged, firewired ide-raid system that runs on a common 12 volt power adapter. i want this thing to survive drops onto concrete and brief dippings into bothtub pressure water. ... so, as i was driving i was envisioning this thing.. slipping in 3 120gb drives which would be prepared or 'integrate' from 1 to 3 drives by a bios supporting support for all raid operations even in iffy power situations. the ability to contineu a task on power-on..  i really want that thing. the deluxe version that takes 4 drives for raid-5 with fallback. i want to buy that in a store for under $1000.

then i go shopping and come back home. I make some calls, take one, talk to the neighbors, put my things away, eat, stretch, that sort of thing.. now.. i hit n-space. i'm plugging in. i'm looking for a term to describe the state-shift..  and start browsing.

my second link in, from brought me to "Have iPod, Will Secretly Bootleg. its got 5 gigs.

that was a great diversion.. but i want a solid and huge raid-5 drive, one that will clone itself to another one like it on demand. with a great browser interface. ipod-like boot-support.i want easy to replace air-filters. firewire. tcp. ip. http. infrared. wireless storage that can take a licking and keep on ticking. emp-proof? nah. just quiet, well-connected and self-contained raid5. small enough to fit into a safe-deposit box. perhaps this 'format/software' could be grow as a 2 disk/slot brick specialized for ide copying. dunno. i just want my hard-drive-appliance today, it can be ugly and big within reason, but keep it portable. too small too small

first upstream of threads

well, hello. its been a beautiful few days outside now and i have enjoyed all to little time out. i'd been wanting to see through to completion the ideas i had about hyperlinking my site and i now have done that. i've also re-upstreamed the site in full as large pieces of it got broken over the last few days. anyway, a few more upstreams are ahead but the meat of the code has been written and the bugs have been pushed to where i can deal with them. knock on wood :)
