Andrew Albanese, Digital Libraries Reach Out to Al .... Andrew Albanese, Digital Libraries Reach Out to Alumni, Library Journal, July 15, 2002. Dartmouth alumni now have free online access to 70 million full-text articles from 7100+ journals. Journal licensing agreements do not allow Dartmouth to pay for access by students and faculty and then extend access to alumni. So the Friends of the Dartmouth College Library bought new subscriptions just for the alumni. (PS: Will new gifts from the happy alums offset the cost?) [FOS News]
Wow. I really hope others do this. (Hear that CalTech). This would really open up these resources to more people, increase information dispersal and speed up many of the changes happening today. It will also scare to death all publishers that have a business model that includes drastically restricting access so that outlandish fees can be charged. 10:36:24 PM

Dow 36000 Once Again. Dow 36000 Once Again I see that James Glassman and Kevin Hassett are writing in the Wall Street Journal today, lying about what their Dow 36000 book says. There are two different Dow 36000 books that they could have written. The first would say four things: It looks like stocks held for a very long periods--30 years or more--are no riskier than bonds. If you valued stocks on the same cash-flow principles as you valued bonds, the Dow would be... [Semi-Daily Journal]
I may not understand all the economics but this explained for me a lot more about what is going on than anything I read in the papers. I love blogs!! 10:24:54 PM

A nice link to a good NY Times article. I tend to agree with him on many points. Our government was designed to be inefficient. In order to get anything done, it takes a real consensus. During the past few years, we really had caretaker presidents and governments. The main thing they needed to do was not screw things up. It is easy to denigrate Washington during these times. It really is not DOING much.
I believe we are entering a critical period where government will no longer have a light hand at the wheel. We want government to DO something and to DO it right. It will not come easy but I have a firm confidence in the greatness of the American people and their institutions. We are the most adaptable, creative culture ever on the face of the Earth. We will find a unique, novel way to find and surmount all of our problems. And the world will be a better place. For You. And me. Just you wait. And see. Jackie DeShannon, 1969;-)
One of the best SF series is the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey. In the first books, the Dragonriders, whose job was to protect the planet from destructive thread, were ignored. Thread had not fallen for so long that people did not believe the Dragonriders were anything but parasites. But when thread did finally fall, it was the dragons and their riders who came to the rescue. I think thread is about to fall. 10:16:54 PM

Not much today. Everyone got back last night and is very tired. Saw 'Goldmember' and laughed throughout. I think it is the funniest one yet. I am putting together an Austin Powers film festival of DVDs. It will not only have the 2 movies, but also all the antecedants: 'Our Man Flint', 'In Like Flint', 'The Ipcress File', 'Dr. No', 'Goldfinger', and 'Thunderball'. Any other movies that AP 'stole' from? 9:44:26 PM
