SJ Mercury: End user licenses keep getting more intrusive. Dan Gillmor. Impenetrable EULAs are nothing new in the tech business. But they're getting more intrusive and less fair every day. The latest anti-innovation is the vendor's claim of a unilateral right to change the function of the product you've already purchased. [Tomalak's Realm]

Just remember: The bastards always go too far. It does not matter if it is EULAs, corporate bosses, right-wing giveaways to business and left-wing taz and spend programs. They always go too far and the pendulum swings back. That is what allows the self-correcting aspects of capitalism and democracy to work. No one ever catches a cheat who only tries to get a 'C'. They get caught because they try to get an 'A'. People would not be too pissed off at coporate bosses who made a couple of hundred thousand. It is when they get $40 million and claim they are worth it. When a company has a very important computer screwed up by MS' tampering, this will disappear. I just hope there is not much destruction in the meantime ;-)  11:59:15 PM

John Lennon. "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." [Quotes of the Day]

Michael Pritchard. "No matter how rich you become, how famous or powerful, when you die the size of your funeral will still pretty much depend on the weather." [Quotes of the Day]

Something to think about.  11:46:19 PM

I love Schlotzsky's

Starbucks has wireless access to the Internet but a deli like Schlotzsky's is a little different. And it looks like it will be set up as a community service, since the signal may work out to 4 miles. Really cool. Hope it succeeds.  11:45:00 PM

But what about that second helping?

'Third-helping' hormone found [Nature Science Update]

We shall have to see where this leads. The control of eating is tremendously complex and altering one side of the equation may not have the results we hope for. The body is incredibly adaptive. It may require a much larger knowledge of the entire system before we get a good handle on a 'cure'.  9:15:02 AM

Chavez says U.S. wanted him dead [News via OpenFlows]

This is what the rest of the world reads about us. That we are again trying to topple governments that are hostile to us, or at least our oil interests. These are most likely self-serving stories but it fits in with the perception of many people in the Third world. We have done it in the past. People expect us to do it in the future.

We have the best media and propaganda machine in the world. Why don't we unleash Madison avenue on the rest of the world? And do it right. Really show them who were are and why were are such a great country. Not some rah rah patriotic ad that people will ignore.Think of the ad campaign a billion dollars could launch. It would be cheaper than fighting urban warfare in the heart of Baghdad.  9:10:38 AM

Using Nature's own tools against it

New weapons for war on superbugs [Nature Science Update]

Antibiotics will always select for bacteria resistant for them. However, most antibiotics are derived from natural molecules designed to protect the organism from bacteria. Harnessing these processes would allow us to either mimic natural processes to create new antibiotics, or even use these processes in entirely new ways to create unique molecules.  8:54:42 AM

Today in Knowledge Management: Is Knowledge Sharing Natural?
"The most direct approach isn't always the best." So says the Chinese-cookie fortune that I've got taped to my display. It jumps out at me this morning as I browse the weblogs of two gentlemen for whom information flow is a normal course of nature.

As people discover the new tools, collaboration will be easier. Companies that foster such collaboration will succeed over those that don't. Why? Because the environment is changing, the business climate is altering all the time. Companies that can deal with this change, harness it to create unique knowledge will survive. Those that can not change, will not.  8:51:11 AM

Well, I have a couple of nibbles at my stellar cv. I'll have to see how they play out. Looks like more bad news for biotech inSeattle. Targeted Genetics is laying of 25% of its staff. EVen more people to flood the market.  8:46:06 AM
